Some 62,000 Boston workers are members of organized labor.
1933
The number represents 17% of the city’s workforce. By the end of the year, 16,000 workers join some form of labor organization, raising the percentage to 23%. An estimated 85 to 90% of them are members of the Boston Central Labor Union. Only 4,000 workers are added to organized labor in Boston in 1934, 10,000 are lost in 1935, and 4,000 added back in 1936. But 45,000 are added during President Roosevelt’s second term.
